Hold the phone. Has the world been pronouncing Ariana Grande's name wrong all this time and not known? Well, according to the singer herself, we have. Or at least, we haven't been pronouncing it the way her beloved grandfather would.
In an interview with Beats 1, Ariana opened up about her new album and personal topics, including if she was going to hyphenate her last name when she gets married to Pete Davidson. The singer said yes to the hyphenated name but wasn't too sure about changing her professional name.
"I don't know, I feel like I'd eventually just like to be 'Ariana.' Isn't that sick? I feel like it's got a ring to it," said the 25-year-old singer.
But Ariana quickly backtracked once she started talking about her grandfather who was very proud of their last name, Grande, which she clearly pronounces as ‘Gran-DEE.’ "I have to keep Grande, because of my grandpa. I think of him with everything I do, and he was so proud of our name," the singer said.
"My grandpa said Gran-DEE. Gran-dee was kind of the, I guess, Americanised version of it, you know? Made it more chill… And then my brother was like, 'We should say Grahn-day’. It's so fun to say it. It's funny. It's a funny name'... I grew up saying Gran-dee. I think of my grandpa, and I wish I said Gran-dee more," Ariana explained.
It seems that we've got Frankie Grande to thank for the pronunciation. Ariana went on to make fun of her super Italian name: "Literally, my name is like Ariana Grande-Butera! I'm like a pizza!"
So... Do we say Gran-DEE or Grahn-DAY?
