According To Science, It's Healthier To Sleep In The Cold

Do you have to constantly argue with your roommate about who gets to control the A/C temperature or fan speed?

If you’re the one that argues it's too warm all the time, soon you can argue with solid science to back up your point.

According to an article written by Dr Christopher Winter (how fitting), Medical Director at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, our bedroom temperatures have a big affect on our sleep quality.

Dr. Winter says that our rooms should be between 16°C and 19.5°C for the best sleep. Any temperature below or above this range will result in constant tossing and turning all night long.

How does temperature affect sleep quality, you ask? Well, our body temperatures naturally peak and decline throughout the day. We are the most warmest in the late afternoon, and the coolest around 5am in the morning. And sleep usually begins as our body temperature starts to drop. So, a colder room will help you fall asleep quicker.

1. Your sleep will be more restful

Research done at the University of South Australia found that certain forms of insomnia occur with poor body temperature regulation.

2. It’ll keep you young

Sleeping in room warmer than 21°C will stop melatonin release in the body, one of the body’s best anti-aging hormones. Sleeping in total darkness and low temperatures will encourage melatonin release.

3. It can help you lose weight!

According to Naturopathic doctor Natasha Turner, healthy sleep patterns decrease the amount of cortisol (the stress hormone) present in your body. When you don’t get enough sleep, you have high levels of cortisol in your body – which means you’ll be more likely to grab that box of cookies or bag of chips for that quick energy boost.

4. Your risk for metabolic diseases are lowered

One study found that sleeping in a room with the temperature set at 18.8°C can help prevent certain metabolic diseases like diabetes. Participants burned more calories while awake and nearly doubled their amount of good fat, which allows the body to store fewer calories. Over time, this can lower the risk of metabolic diseases.

So, what are you waiting for? Go throw on your favourite pajamas, and turn down (the A/C) for what? For sleep!
