A Singaporean woman made headlines recently when she spotted a cockroach in her car while driving, panicked, and lost control of the car, crashing it.

Thankfully, she escaped with minor injuries, but it could have been a lot worse. So if you want to avoid unpleasant surprises while driving, here are three things you can do to avoid having creepy-crawlies in your car.

#1 Avoid eating in your car

Cockroaches, like other pests, are attracted to food, so the best way to prevent that is to avoid eating in the car. But when it’s unavoidable – when you’re in a traffic jam on the highway, for example – make sure you clean your car thoroughly afterwards.

#2 Clean your car regularly

Of course, cleaning your car after eating in it is a given, but it also helps to give your car a thorough vacuuming every now and then to get rid of food particles. Getting rid of clutter, which provides hiding and breeding grounds for cockroaches, is also a good idea.

#3 Avoid parking near drains or garbage bins

Cockroaches and other pests call these places home, so it’s best to avoid them when you park your car. Air-conditioning vents can be a way for them to get into your car, so make sure these are closed when you park.

#4 Pandan leaves!

Mostly used in Asian cooking, pandan leaves are known for their sweet, vanilla-like scented herb. Apparently, this herb is an effective roach repellent too!
