Last Thursday night, firefighter Abu Zarin Hussin passed away from a cobra bite. He was known as Malaysia’s ‘snake whisperer’ due to his ability to handle the venomous reptiles.

Besides cobras, Malaysia is home to more than 20 different species of venomous snakes. If one of these happens to slither into your house, you should probably call in the experts to remove it instead of doing so yourself.

Here are the four types of venomous snakes in Malaysia.

#1 Kraits

A bite from a krait may not be that painful, but its venom contains neurotoxins that cause paralysis and ultimately death. The Malayan krait, banded krait and red-headed krait are common varieties found here.

#2 Cobras

Most cobras, especially king cobras, are known for delivering large amounts of potent venom when biting their victims, while spitting cobras blind their victims with sprays of venom from their fangs. These two snakes, as well as the monocled cobra, are found in Malaysia.

#3 Coral Snakes

Don’t let their names or their colouring fool you. Coral snake bites can be extremely lethal, and their bright colours function as a warning sign to any who approach. The Blue Malaysian coral snake is one of four varieties found here.

#4 Pit Vipers

Pit vipers are known for their highly toxic venom, which could affect anything from the nervous system to blood. Most of Malaysia’s venomous snakes are pit vipers, from the Malayan pit viper to the Kinabalu Green Pit Viper.
