We are always told to clean and organize our room, but science proves that having a messy room can make people creative!

A group of researchers from the University of Minnesota found out that being messy can bring out your creative side and make you more imaginative.

The study was conducted based on a series of trials with participants being split into two groups and were tasked to brainstorm ideas on new uses for ping pong balls.

One group did their trial in a messy room and another in a tidy one and the test found that even though both groups came out with the same amount of ideas, the group in the messy room came up with more interesting and fun ideas!

Psychological scientist Kathleen Vohs said that people in an untidy space prefer newer, novel products than choosing existing reliable ones too.

“We’re all exposed to various kinds of settings, such as in our office space, our homes, our cars, even on the internet.”

“Whether you have control over the tidiness of the environment or not, you are exposed to it and our research shows it can affect you.”

Of course, creativity doesn’t just come to anyone with a messy room or desk, but it certainly helps!

Do you know someone messy and are they creative? Let us know your experience!
