It's one thing for your dog to eat your homework, but having a cat rack up your electricity bill? That's a whole other thing.

A family in Russia was recently sued by a local energy company for their unpaid bills. The family accumulated a debt of approximately 80,000 rubles (RM5,000) and in their defence, they claimed that it was all their cat's fault!

Mind you, all this happened in front of a judge in court! The family had been accused of refusing to pay their electricity bills to the local energy company and when they were taken to court, they claimed that they hadn't used the electricity, but that the meter had been tampered with by their cat!

The Russian family explained to the judge that their cat had a habit of scaling the walls of their house and spending a lot of time on the roof. They went on to say that they've spotted the naughty kitty climbing on the electricity meter to reach the roof and though they attempted to move the meter, they couldn't.

The family told the judge that the cat eventually broke the meter's wire seal and somehow managed to tamper with the device that caused the high bills!

Fortunately, the cat was saved from all accusations when the energy company's lawyer managed to prove its innocence! The lawyer brought in an experienced electrician, Sergey Platonyuk, who testified that the wire seal is so strong, the energy company employees have to use wire cutters!

"It is impossible to accidentally rip a seal off the meter," he said. "It is positioned very close to the meter and the wire is so strong that the electricians themselves use pliers to access the meter. Therefore, even if the cat had clung to the seal with its claws, it would have held."

So, how could a cat get through that?

In the end, the court found that Sergey's arguments were convincing and ruled that the family had to pay the 80,000 rubles (RM5,000) they owed, as well as 2,500 rubles (RM156) in court fees!

Take that! That's why you don't mess with cats!
