What does a person do when they're lonely? Call up friends, right? But… what if you didn't have any friends or anyone else to call? What then?

A 55-year-old man from Turkey is currently facing up to five years in jail for calling the pole 45,210 times in just one year! The man is facing charges of "preventing public officials from performing their duty".

Seref Can is a divorced man from Istanbul who has allegedly called the local police line over 100 times per day between 15th May 2017 and 15th May 2018. Despite calling multiple times, he never once made any complaint or asked for police assistance. Instead, he tried to make conversation with whoever picked up the phone.

As the calls kept coming in, the police staff became highly irritated by Seref's unusual habit. They filed a complaint about him with the Istanbul Police's communications and electronics department. The department confirmed that the man had called the 115 emergency number for a total of 45,210 times in a year and investigators charged him with "obstructing service of public institutions."

The lonely man is set to stand trial at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance where, if found guilty of the charges, he would face a jail term of up to five years!

Seref has apologised to the police in an official statement. He claimed that he only called them continually because he was lonely.

He wrote, "I divorced my wife about two years ago. I was consuming alcohol all the time. I called the emergency line because I was feeling depressed and lonely. I regret my actions and won't do it again."
