A zoo in Egypt has recently been accused of painting black stripes on a donkey to make it look like a zebra. Student, Mahmoud Sarhan, uploaded images on Facebook after visiting Cairo’s International Garden municipal park. Aside for the animal’s small size and pointy ears, it also had black smudges on its face.

While the zoo denies the act, the pictures quickly went viral and experts have started to weigh in on the species of the animal. A vet contacted by local news group Extra News said that zebras have black snouts with consistent and parallel stripes on its body.

Mr Sarhan told Extra News that the enclosure contained two animals and both had been painted.

The zoo’s director, Mohamed Sultan, was contacted by a local radio station Nogoum FM and he insisted that the animals aren’t fake.
