Sweden’s Twitter made a shocking and random announcement yesterday: Swedish meatballs—their signature food served in traditional holiday meals and in IKEA cafeterias all over the world—are actually Turkish.
Charles XII was the King of Sweden from 1697 until 1718. During his reign, he lived in Turkey for a bit between 1709 and 1714. At the time, the Great Northern War happened, during which Russia challenged Sweden.
Anyway, apparently King Charles XII brought those meatballs from Turkey back to Sweden.

Sweden’s official Twitter didn’t say why they made this sudden and startling confession, but it certainly caused a lot of surprise and confusion on social media. Besides meatballs, it’s also Swedish tradition to serve the meatballs with lingonberry jam. Not knowing what to believe or don’t believe anymore, one anxious Twitter user then asked is lingonberries are even Swedish to begin with!
Luckily for him, Sweden assured him that Lingonberry jam is as Swedish as it gets.
