Winning a gold medal is almost every athlete’s dream, and this Malaysian swimmer not only won gold but also defeated a reigning Olympic champion!

Our very own Welson Sim swam his way to victory recently at the Victorian Open swimming championships in Melbourne, Australia. The 21-year-old swimmer came in at 3:53.77 in the men’s 400m freestyle event, earning him first place.

The Malaysian swimmer beat reigning Olympic champion, Mack Horton from Australia, who came in at second with 3:55:77.

Last month, Welson made the decision to leave for Australia for attachment at the Melbourne Vicente Swimming Club, where Mack also trains. And clearly, the training paid off!

The Sarawakian’s next aim is to qualify for the Olympics for a second time.

“I hope to qualify for the Olympics for the second time under category A. That is my main goal and I hope to do it at the world championships or the SEA Games in the Philippines at the end of this year,” Welson said.

Welson not only won gold at the 400m freestyle event, he also swam his way to earn silver in the men’s 100m freestyle final! The swimmer finished at 50:19, just behind 2015 world championship silver medalist, Cameron McEvoy of Australia, who came in at 49.56.

Congratulations Welson! We’re so proud of your accomplishments and we’re wishing you all the best!
