For many, the news did not come as a surprise as the badminton player was diagnosed with nose cancer last year and has since been receiving treatment.
“I was given eight questionnaires to answer about my conditions and the outcome came out to show that I’m not fit to do high intensity activities,” he said. “So it’s not suitable for me to exert myself for the sake of my health.”
Chong Wei went on to thank everyone for the support he has received over the past 19 years.
“I want to thank you, Malaysians. I want to thank a lot of people, KBS, ISN. I want to thank all my coaches, Datuk Misbun Sidek, Datuk Tey Seu Bock,” he said, holding back tears.
Malaysians took to the Twitterverse to express their love, support and appreciation for the beloved badminton champion.
Thank you for everything, Datuk Lee Chong Wei. We will forever be proud of all your accomplishments.
