Soon, athletes of former Commonwealth countries will be marching into Carrara Stadium in Australia to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Among them, of course, will be Malaysia’s own contingent of athletes. In total, 178 athletes from our country will be competing across 16 sports in various events.
Here are the four Commonwealth sports you should look out for:
1. Badminton
Badminton is, to Malaysia, what football is to many European countries – it’s our pride and joy. Some of our most talented athletes will be duking it out with the rest of the world here, including local legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
2. Cycling
A number of our athletes will be competing in various cycling events at the Games, but most notably, we’ll get to see former Rainbow Jersey winner Mohd Azizulhasni Awang in action during the men’s sprint and keirin events.
3. Diving
Among the divers who will be competing this year are former gold medalist Pandelela Rinong Pamg, who’ll be in the 10m platform event and 10m synchronised platform with Cheong Jun Hoong.
4. Squash
In recent years, Malaysia has come out on top in squash in many Games thanks to Nicol David. She will be competing in this year’s games, along with Aifa Azman and Sivasangari Subramaniam.
