Don’t you just miss those good ol’ karaoke sesh with your friends and fam? Pretending you’re at a private concert, the loud chatting over the music, and of course, singing along to your fave songs.
And where karaoke hits are concerned, you probably have a few that you simply must sing every time there’s a mic in your hand. Especially when you’re feeling a bit jiwang and need to just let them feels flow.
Here are 10 karaoke favourites we all like to think we can sing perfectly but probably can’t…
#1 Gemilang by Jaclyn Victor
When Jaclyn Victor won Malaysian Idol back in 2004 and performed Gemilang, the song written especially for the winner of the singing show, everyone was so moved to tears.
The song sounds like it’s an easy one at first but once you reach the bridge and towards the end, you’ll need to be a Malaysian Idol to be able to pull off those high notes.
#2 Loving You by Minnie Riperton
This very adorable love song from the 70s is also another classic hit loved by karaoke-goers. The extremely high key parts take extreme talent to sing on-pitch.
Alas, for plebs like us, we can only pretend like we’re singing the song like a pro.
#3 I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith
Most songs are difficult to sing along to because of the very high keys from female artists but lead- singer Steven Tyler’s vocal range is so wide that he can sing as high as his female counterparts.
This is why I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing is an absolutely difficult power song.
#4 My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
Celine Dion’s voice has such a great range that in this legendary Titanic song she perfectly captures the soft and low tones and also the high pitches!
From the song’s initial release back in 1997, it remains one of the most loved breakup songs til today.
#5 Fix You by Coldplay
Okay, not all difficult songs have those high keys like Fix You. What makes this Coldplay song so difficult is maintaining a melody instead of sounding like a dead fish reading the lyrics off the screen.
#6 Chandelier by Sia
If anyone ever says new songs aren’t that difficult to sing along to, you show them just how tough Chandelier is. Sia’s voice has that sexy huskiness but she’s still able to bring so much emotion to all her songs.
Chandelier’s chorus is probably the vocal cord killer with how much power and range you’ll be using.
#7 Wannabe by Spice Girls
So, this fun song isn’t exactly the most challenging in terms of keys and pitches but we’ve all been there where we tried to sing EVERY part of the song solo, and yes, it ain’t easy to do.
Not to mention, you’re probably trying to dance along with the Spice Girls, you’d be outta breath halfway through the song.
#8 Bring Me To Life by Evanescence
This all-time favourite for the emo kids has such deep and meaningful lyrics. As much as you want to relate to the sadness and darkness, you can only pretend to sing the song like how lead singer Amy Lee does.
The male parts sung by Paul McCoy isn’t that easy to achieve either and in case you haven’t noticed, he’s performing screamo-style at the end of his rap part.
#9 Rap God by Eminem
Speaking of rap, Eminem really is the ‘Rap God’ when he released this song in 2013. It was one of the fastest rap songs ever with 1,560 words in a 6 minute and 4 seconds song.
Or to show just how fast supersonic speed is, he raps 97 words in 15 seconds! That’s an average of 6.5 words per second!
Although he’s topped his record when he released Godzilla in 2020, Rap God is still one of the karaoke-favourites... that nobody can quite get right.
#10 I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston
Of course, what would a karaoke session be like without THE. ULTIMATE. LOVE. SONG. It starts slow and easy, allowing you to build the confidence to sing the song.
In fact, even the first chorus is still manageable up until the second chorus at 3:00, then it’s an all-out exercising those vocal cords.
