For the past two years, us Instagram users in Malaysia have been looking on enviously as other users around the world enjoyed the platform’s music feature on their Stories.
We couldn’t even hear the music being played in the background of these stories…
But finally, it is here. Instagram’s Music and Reels has finally made its way to Malaysia.

Introduced in 2018, the music function was first lanched in Brazil and it then made its way to the US, UK, Japan and Australia.
Reels however is still fairly new and was introduced in August 2020.
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait as long as we did for Reels.

This morning, many Malaysian Instagram users woke up and were pleasantly surprised to find the addition buttons on our apps.
For those unfamiliar with both features, we’ll take you through them.
Music for Stories allows you to add a soundtrack to your video. To access it, tap to add a sticker and you’ll see a new music icon nestled between the previously available functions.
From there, a library filled with thousands of songs will be available and you can search for the perfect soundtrack by mood, genre or what’s popular. Tap on the play button and you’ll be able to hear a preview.
Once you’ve selected your song, you can fast-forward or rewind through the song to choose the exact part that fits your story.

Reels on the other hand, is Instagram’s answer to Tik Tok. You can create fun videos for your followers by recording and editing 15-second multi-clip videos with the audio, effects, and new creative tools.
Reels can be shared with your followers on Feed and those with a public account will be able to reach to a wider Instagram community in Explore.
You can access the Reels function at the bottom of the app’s camera and from there you’ll see a variety of creative editing tools on the left including Audio, AR Effects, Timer and Countdown, Align, and Speed.
These 15-second videos can be recorded in a series of clips – one at a time, all at once or by using videos from your gallery.
