If you’ve ever had to use Microsoft Office for any school or work project, you’ll definitely remember Clippy, that anthropomorphic paperclip that sat at the corner of your document, giving you advice and tips.
Back in 2001, Microsoft said goodbye to Clippy with Microsoft XP but now, the company is planning to resurrect the paper clip helper, but in emoji form!
In a bid to resurrect Clippy, the software company recently released a tweet that offered to change the paperclip emoji in Microsoft 365 with a Clippy emoji if the tweet managed to get over 20,000 likes.
Many users have long had a love-hate relationship with Clippy and though many asked for the removal of the office assistant, they are now cheering on its return.
The tweet currently has 148, 292 likes at the time of writng.
While Microsoft promised to bring Clippy back as an emoji, many users are also asking to bring the paperclip back in his original form.
Clippy was first launched in 1997 and he was ever ready to offer helpful suggestions though, he did get on many people’s nerves.
With the launch of Office XP in 2001, users officially bid goodbye to Clippy who was turned off by default.
At the time, Microsoft product manager Lisa Gurry said: “Office XP is so easy to use that Clippy is no longer necessary, or useful.”
Now that the tweet has exceeded its target of 20,000 likes, we’re waiting to see if the software company will keep to its word and bring Clippy back, even if it’s in emoji form.
