We are one step closer to an apocolypse caused by angry robots who’s ultimate purpose is to rid the earth of the human race.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have trained an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm into a psychopath.
The psychopath AI, who goes by the name of Norman, after the iconic character in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic flick “Psycho”, was trained to perform image captioning.

How did this turn him into a psychopath though, right? Well, apparently Norman was exposed to only the worse, gruesome and violent images, sourced from none other than Reddit.
Then, Norman was tested using a bunch of Rorsach inkblots (those weird ink art things that always looks like deformed butterflies), to compare Norman to other AI which hadn’t been exposed to gruesome images.

Where a normal AI saw “a close up of a vase with flowers”, Norman saw “a man being shot dead”. Where a normal AI saw “a person holding an umbrella in the air”, Norman saw “a man being shot in front of his screaming wife”, and where a standard AI saw a couple standing together, The digital psycho saw a pregnant woman falling from construction. Yep, creepy.
Scientists concluded that after so much exposure to the darkest corners of Reddit, Norman never learned empathy logic, basically turning him into a psychopath.
The most important question of course is why on earth would these scientists do such a thing? Too bored issit?

Well, by creating the first AI psychopath, the researches prove that the method and material used to teach a machine can influence that machine’s behaviour in a big way.
Which means that, in the future, if our house monitoring Ais ever act weird, we can know for sure that it isn’t the AI’s algorithm that’s the problem, but instead it’s the information that has been fed to the AI.
