Kostadin Kushlev, from the University of Virginia, USA, with researchers from University of British Columbia, Canada, have revealed the negative side effects smartphones have on human interaction in a study they published recently.
In the study, the researchers divided 304 participants with an average age of 30 into two groups.
The first group was told to keep their phones on the table during their dining experience while the second group was told to put their phones away.
After the meals, the group which put their phones away reported having a happier experience during their meal compared to those whose phones were on the table.
The researchers concluded that the distractions from smartphones reduced the enjoyment of sitting together to share a meal, with Kushlev adding that, “Statistically speaking, the effect was pretty significant.”
While Kushlev acknowledges that smartphones can make you feel closer to people you’re texting, at the same time they also make users feel less connected to the people around them.
So, the next time you’re sitting down for a meal, be sure to put those phones away and bond with the people you’re with IRL.
