12 Everyday Things Your Parents Confirm Will Have At Home

Sometimes you look at your parents and think that boomers live such foreign lives compared to you, but honestly, living with them makes you appreciate everything they’ve done for you.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve moved out of your parents’ house by now or you’re still living with them—you confirm plus chop have seen your parents using most these items before. They sure bring back some (bitter) sweet memories for you, so let’s head down to nostalgia lane with these 12 things:

#1 A cabinet full of ointments

Minyak angin, minyak gamat, Yu Yee Oil, Vick’s VapoRub, Zambuk, Mopiko—you name it, your parents have it. They’re the go-to cures for almost any kind of sicknesses.

#2 A bunch of different remedies for all kinds of illnesses

Coughing? Take Nim Jiom Pei Pa Koa.

Tummy ache? Swallow a bunch of Po Chai pills.

Not growing up fast enough? Down the icky-tasting Scott’s Emulsion.

Bad grades? Drink Brand’s Essence of Chicken.

No matter how ‘good’ all of these are for you, you definitely hated them because they taste so nasty.

#3 A multitude of ‘weapons’

If you were one of those particularly notty kids, you’ll probably be familiar with the rotan, the bamboo backscratcher, the classic hangers and the feather duster.

#4 A plastic bag full of plastic bags

It’s common practice to save plastic bags we’ve gotten from supermarkets or tapau-ing food for re-use, typically for the tong sampah.

#5 The two biggest LIES!

The number one biggest lie would be the butter biscuit cookies tin which is constantly filled with sewing stuff or other junk. Meanwhile, the second biggest lie would be ice cream containers filled with frozen meats.

#6 A variety of kiap kiaps

These items may have different names and functions, but they share one similar characteristic…they ‘kiap’ stuff. Hence, they’re all named the kiap kiap.

#7 A tempayan and gayung

Back then, showers were a luxury. Instead, our parents filled up a tempayan (or large bucket for the lesser bougie ones) and used a gayung to bathe themselves. They also used to use this method to wash their bum bums before bidets became a thing.

#8 Using hoses as bidets

Speaking of bidets, once the water pressure across the country greatly improved, bidets were the norm for washing up after dropping a number two. However, our parents had to improvise by using those orange rubber hoses instead.

#9 The bugs’ most dreaded tools

You might have seen your parents chasing away flies with the swatter just before meal time and zapping away mosquitos in the evening with those electric mosquito zappers.

#10 The ultimate resting place—the Lazy Man Chair

Remember those chairs made of a metal frame and rubber strands bound around it? Yeah it sounds super uncomfortable, but anyone who’s ever sat in it will know that it’s the BEST place to take a nap.

#11 The bunch of ‘good’ plates which are never used

You’re probably familiar with your parents stocking up a bunch of the good sets of plates and cutleries which are rarely or never ever used! They’re usually stored in glass cabinets for display while you guys would use mismatched plates and bowls daily.

#12 The Malaysian flag or Malaysian jersey

Every household has a Malaysian flag in one form or another. It could be one of those large flags placed in front of the house all year round, a Harimau Malaya jersey, or it could be as simple as your tadika drawing of the flag for National Day. We all have our own ways to show our love for the country.
