Have you ever been told to wake someone up with the smell of food? Or even just the name of the sleeping person’s favourite food? Have you always thought that that was just something funny to do and it doesn’t actually work?
Well, one teenager proved that this actually works when he woke up from a 62-day coma when he heard the words “chicken fillet”.

18-year-old Chiu from Taiway fell unconscious after he unfortunately got into a car accident while riding his scooter.
Chiu was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Ton Yen General Hospital in Hsinchu County, where the teenager was diagnosed with multiple injuries including laceration of the spleen, right kidney, and liver; bleeding from abdominal cavity fractures; common iliac artery bleeding; and serious damage to many of his internal organs, director of the ICU Hsieh Tsung-hsin, shared.
Doctors performed emergency surgery on the teenager and were able to stabilise his condition however, Chiu fell into a deeper coma.

The teenager then went through six more operations.
According to the ICU director, the medical staff approached Chiu’s treatment one step at a time. A hospital nurse even shared that the teen was in a “tug of war with the god of death.”
Throughout his procedures, his family stayed by Chiu’s bedside and prayed that he would wake up.
On his 62nd day in a coma, Chiu did just that and it’s thanks to chicken fillets.

According to reports, Chiu’s older brother visited him in the hospital on the 62nd day and joked that he would eat Chiu’s favourite food if he didn’t wake up.
“Bro, I’m going to eat your favourite chicken fillet,” he said.
And it looked like Chiu wasn’t about to let his sibling steal his food (we would too, tbh).
Chiu’s pulse began to accelerate and his vital signs begin to stabilise. Soon after, the teenager miraculously regained consciousness.

Luckily, the 18-year-old has now recovered fully and has been discharged from the hospital – and eating all the chicken fillet he wants, we hope.
After spending so long under the hospital and its staff’s care, Chiu returned to the facility with a cake to thank them for helping him get better.
He credited his recovery to the staff’s tireless efforts and was grateful for all they had done. Hsieh however said that it was Chiu’s strong will to survive that helped him.

We sure hope Chiu got to eat all the chicken fillets he wanted to celebrate his departure from the hospital!
