20-year-old Mohammad Hakimin Rahim was helping to ferry flood victims to the temporary evacuation centre in Kampung Manjor, Kelantan, when he reportedly fell off the boat and drowned.

According to reports, the victim had collapsed from exhaustion, fell off the boat and drowned as he was ferrying two passengers on at around 10pm on Wednesday night.

Family members found his body at 8.30am on Thursday morning, close to where he was reported to have fallen from the boat.

Reports shared that Hakimin Rahim was exhausted after a long day of paddling and helping villagers and had cramps due to the cold weather when he fainted and fell off the boat.

Kuala Krai Rescue and Fire Department chief Muhammad Rizwab Ar-Rafee Parsimin said that five firemen were immediately dispatched upon receiving the a distress call at 10.07pm.

“A search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out but called off at 12.31am due to the rain, dark conditions, and water overflowing in some low-lying areas,” he said.

“SAR was meant to resume in the morning however, we were informed by family members that his body had already been found,” he added.

The chief believes that exhaustion from helping flood victims from the early morning to the late night, and cramps from the cold were the main reasons why the youth had fallen off boat.

His body has been handed over to the police and sent to Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra, Kuala Krai for further action.
