Think of the holidays and you’ll no doubt think about parties, dinners, and visiting the homes of family and friends. But what happens when an ocean or a mountain separates you from the people you love?

Perhaps you can fly over for a visit, but owing to time and cost, you’ll probably have to narrow down your list to a grand total of one person to visit overseas. Or maybe you just wish everyone well over WhatsApp or email and be done with it. That’s no fun is it?

Thankfully, we live in the age of high-speed Internet, and if you want fun with friends over the Internet then nothing beats playing games together. Here are 4 games to consider pouring your time into with friends this holiday…

#1 Fortnite Battle Royale

Fight in a Hunger Games-style battleground of 100 players with a squad of up to 4 people in this online multiplayer shooter by Epic Games. Each round, you and your friends will have to scavenge for weapons while avoiding death by other players and a “storm” that gradually shrinks the playing area.

What makes this game unique is the building mechanic that lets players gather materials and build ramps, forts, and traps in order to give them a competitive advantage. Fortnite is free-to-play and is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

#2 Lawbreakers

Think Overwatch-style gameplay except with its pace switched to insanely fast and an anti-gravity mechanic strapped onto it. LawBreakers is a great shooter to enjoy with friends if you can’t commit long hours to story-driven games or tedious levelling systems.

Choose a character from a role – there are currently 9 roles with each role having 2 characters to choose from – that fits your playstyle, choose a game mode, and you’ll be having fun in no time. LawBreakers is available on PS4 and PC.

#3 Final Fantasy XV: Comrades Multiplayer Expansion

If you’re at all tuned in to the wonderful world of role-playing games then you would have no doubt played – or least heard of – the latest addition to the long-running Final Fantasy franchise: Final Fantasy XV.

Originally released in 2016, the game has seen its content grow with story expansions, but its latest expansions are perhaps the best if you’re looking to enjoy this game with friends. Named Comrades, this latest expansion lets you and your friends create your very own character and play with each other. The overall gameplay doesn’t feel detached from the main game either as it happens 6 months after the events of the main game.

Final Fantasy XV Comrades is available on PS4 and Xbox One. You will require the base game to play this expansion.

#4 Warframe

“Blade and gun wielding space ninjas in sophisticated armour capable of performing the most ridiculous parkour moves” is perhaps the best way to describe the characters you will play in Warframe.

While not much in the way of story, Warframe is a great game for both casual and hardcore gamers alike with its co-op focused gameplay that revolves around resource gathering, levelling, and raiding (that’s game speak for conquering dungeons and defeating the boss within it).

The game is free-to-play and is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
