You’ve graduated from high school, reached legal driving age, and you’re on your way to university. Everything is looking up. Surely things can only go well from here, you think to yourself. Then, as you start to really think about what course you’d like to pursue, uncertainty and confusion starts to creep in, you know you have to choose, but you don’t know what’s the best decision. Panic ensues.

But, the good news is that, you’re not alone. Most students are just as nervous about making this decision as you are. Just take some time to ask yourself these questions and be honest with your answers and you might find that making a decision on what to study isn’t so difficult after all.

#1 What can I do with it?

Of course, you should always aim to study something that you know you’ll love, but it’s equally as important to research the usefulness of the degree. Don’t be mistaken, having a degree is always a good thing, but it’s good to know how far the degree can take you and whether or not you’ll need higher qualification in the future.

#2 Can I afford the course?

It’s easy to forget that the cost of studying isn’t just limited to the tuition fees and text books you’ll have to pay for. Certain courses may require you to purchase equipment… which can be costly. Money shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a course, but it’s definitely something that you’ll need to think about. It’s also good to keep in mind that you are investing in yourself and your future, and you can always seek out scholarships.

#3 Can I cope with the program?

Let’s be honest—every course and job in the world will have their own set of challenges, which will probably stress you out. That’s just the reality of life. A better to question to ask yourself is whether you’re willing to do what it takes to succeed despite facing difficulties.

#4 Does it equip me with practical skills?

Having theory know-how might get you through exams, but practical skills are what’s needed in the real world. After all, you’re likely to discover that what you study in school may not always be applicable in your job. At the end of the day, you want to be future-proof and adaptable, and having practical skills will help you tremendously.

#5 Can I land a job with it?

The end goal of getting yourself a degree is of course, to make it easy for you to land a job—so find a way to mix and match your interests with what you choose to study.  Research the growth potential of the profession especially with the 4th Industrial revolution.

In fact, it might be a good idea to equip yourself with skills which are unrelated to the course you’re pursuing! Just because you’re studying engineering, doesn’t mean you can’t dabble in some culinary arts. Or imagine being a super accountant by day, and a social events organiser by night!

The good news is that at Taylor’s University, you can do just that.

5 questions you should definitely think about when deciding what to study

Through their recently introduced Taylor’s Curriculum Framework for Bachelor Degree students, Taylor’s University gives students the freedom to mix and match modules to leverage on their strengths, career ambitions and interests, and enhance their appeal to prospective employers.

The curriculum ensures students receive future-proof education as well as shaping students to be adaptable and socially intelligent. It’s so cool they even made a video to tease it, watch it below!

It’s the best thing you can do for yourself to combat any feelings of nervousness when you enter the workforce so make sure you get yourself to Taylor’s University Open Day on 28th and 29th July from 10am to 5pm to meet lecturers and counsellors to learn more!
