Leave your cravings for the usual kimchi jjigae and bulgogi at the door because if you’re a fan of Korean food, then it’s time you expand your foodie horizons to include more of what the Land of the Morning Calm – that’s the title given to South Korea, in case you didn’t know – has to offer.

Quick confession though, some of these dishes may not look as Instagram-worthy as a well-arranged bibimbap in a stone bowl, but rest-assured that they’re absolutely delicious. Ready? Let’s go on a culinary adventure…

#1 Jjajangmyun

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

As Malaysians, we’re no strangers to noodles coated in thick, delicious dark gravy so that makes Jjajangmyun something that’s totally up our alley. The dark colour of Jjajangmyun comes from a salty soybean paste that it’s prepared with and is often served with diced meat such as beef and cucumbers.

#2 Seolleongtang

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

Would you believe us if we told you this simple-looking dish requires almost 10 hours to prepare? Seolleongtang is an ox bone soup that is boiled in water for 10 hours to ensure all the flavours from the bone marrow is infused into the soup. Add some scallions, salt, and pepper for some really awesome taste.

#3 Nokdu-muk

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

No, this isn’t Korean chee cheong fun, although we can totally understand why you would mistake it for that. Nokdu-muk is a savoury mung bean jelly (yup, that’s right, it’s jelly) dish seasoned with soy sauce or vinegar that’s usually served cold as banchan (side dish).

#4 Hotteok

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

Hopefully you’re a fan of pancakes (why wouldn’t you be?) because you’re in for a treat! This sweet Korean pancake is filled with melted brown sugar, chopped nuts, cinnamon, and honey, that will elicit a chorus of “OMG this is so delicious!”. If you have a hankering for something sweet, hotteok will satisfy it, no contest.

#5 Tteokguk

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

Also known as sliced rice cake soup, this traditional Korean dish is usually eaten during the Korean New Year, but is increasingly found in restaurants throughout the year. The clear broth is usually served with thin slices of bouncy rice cake, marinated meat, and eggs.

#6 Shinsegae-Mamee Daebak Spicy Fried Chicken and Kimchi Korean noodles

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

6 korean foods you’ve (probably) never heard of but should absolutely try!

Unlike the 5 dishes we’ve mentioned above, you definitely do not have to travel far to enjoy great Korean flavours with the all new Korean instant noodles from Shinsegae-Mamee with specially formulated noodles that are both springy and chewy. Combined with sauce made by SHINSEGAE FOOD Korea, you get noodles that are absolutely delicious. They are certified Halal by Jakim as well!

The first of the two all new flavours is the kimchi soup noodles featuring rich, hot, and smoky kimchi flavours. Then there’s the spicy fried chicken dry noodles with crunchy fried chicken condiments that’s just pure enjoyment with every bite.

Slurp up! Jal meokgesseumnida (what Koreans traditionally say before eating)!
