Have ever been freaked out by somebody tailing you on the road or feel that someone is constantly watching you?

According to the U.S. National Center for Victims of Crime, stalking is defined as “any unwanted contact between two people that directly or indirectly communicates a threat or places the victim in fear.”

So, we’re talking about real stalking, not the kind where you and you best friend find out everything you can about the person you like.

According to Law Minister, Datuk Liew Vui Keong, Putrajaya is looking forward to make new laws on stalking.

He added that the first proposal to consider stalking as a crime was mooted in 2017.

The proposal was dropped because the act of stalking is difficult to prove, unless the act causes any physical harm to a victim.

Two months ago, the Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) urged law enforcers to implement stalking laws, cautioning on the urgency of the matter. WAO has welcomed the government’s commitment to formulate anti-stalking laws.

It’s executive director, Sumitra Visvanathan, said:

“Such laws will protect survivors of stalking and ensure that stalking does not escalate to more violent crimes, which is a common outcome of stalking.”

The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, also stressed that the Penal Code and the Domestic Violence Act need some amendments to make this matter a reality.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the government should create this anti-stalking law? What actions do you think the government should take next?
