The year 2020 has been a complete rollercoaster ride filled with crazy twists and turns. As countries across the globe went into lockdown, most families were forced to be separated during special occasions.
The holidays this year sure don’t feel like the ones we’ve had pre-COVID-19, but some of these Malaysians made sure their celebrations were still happening:
#1 A WhatsApp Deepavali Food Showdown At Vidya’s
“Deepavali this year was same, but different. As usual, we prepared a lovely dinner for everyone, dressed up and had our prayers at home. Then, our relatives started turning up… with masks on, of course.
Since we also had relatives living far away who couldn’t visit, we caught up via WhatsApp to chat and share pictures. Funnily, it led to a friendly battle of whose cooking was better. I even sent them videos of my mum cooking to prove my point. Sure enough, mummy won!”
#2 Kai Xing made full use of delivery services during the Mooncake Festival
“Every year since I started working part time in Uni, I would make sure to visit relatives and friends around Klang Valley (and some further away) to send mooncakes. I would also usually go around shopping malls where there would be mooncake events to find the best ones to purchase. I’ll try the samples until I find something I like.
This year I couldn’t do any of that so, I switched things up a little. I searched for small bakeries online, bought a few, then used delivery services to send them out to my loved ones. Sure, I’d have liked to see them, but I’m happy that I, at least, got to bring some mooncake joy to them.”
#3 Fahmi spent bulan puasa and Hari Raya with housemates
“I’m from Kelantan but moved to KL to study. After graduating earlier this year, I stayed on in KL in hopes of finding a job… then MCO happened. My housemates and I knew that there’s no chance of us going home for Raya this year.
Since we aren’t the best cooks, we relied on deliveries to feed us during buka puasa. We also called for delivery during Raya and had ourself a little makeshift tapau-ed food spread!
Of course, I missed home too so a temporary solution of being able to video call my siblings and parents allowed me to stay connected.”
#4 Yee Qin ‘visits’ her relatives in Johor Bahru while stuck in Singapore
“Christmas this year was a unique experience. Usually, my family and I will gather at my aunt’s house in JB to celebrate and have a BBQ party. However, some of my relatives and I are stuck in Singapore due to the travel restrictions and can’t go home. So we tried something else.

Those of us in Singapore went to Woodlands Jetty while relatives in JB gathered at Princess Cove. There, we used binoculars to ‘see’ each other. It must have been a funny sight for onlookers because we appeared to be waving at thin air! We also stayed on for a while to ‘reunite’ via video call.
I must say, this was the most interesting Christmas I’ve ever had! It definitely helped to cure some of that homesickness.”
Needless to say, without the internet, the lockdown would have really sucked
Festivities have been a bit different this year, but the internet has definitely saved everyone’s sanity and helped keep loved ones connected. Could you imagine going through the lockdown with no connectivity?
