Authorities in the city of Xi’an in China recently unveiled a special sidewalk lane designed especially for people who walk while staring at their smartphones, ignoring everything around them.

Apparently, the lane was requested by a large shopping mall that now overlooks the smartphone-user-friendly lane as a safety precaution for pedestrians on their phones. Cars often come onto the pavement in front of the mall, sometimes barely missing pedestrians distracted by their phones. So, the lane is meant to keep these people safe!

The walkway is painted red, green and blue and features pictures of smartphones.

Locals have mixed feelings about the lane though. Some are applauding the idea as an ingenious way to keep these smartphone zombies safe, while others are saying that it doesn’t stop these people from bumping into other people and what they really need is to pay attention to what is going on around them instead.

This isn’t the first smartphone-user-friendly lane in China though. In 2014, the city Chongqing launched a similar inititative, unfortunately the lane did not work as intended. Smartphone zombies were so distracted by their phones that they didn’t even notice the lane.
