Coldplay has long been dreaming of a para-paradise and together, they’ve long been advocates for a cleaner world.

Now, the band is continuing their efforts to fix the earth by sponsoring a watercraft that removes plastic trash in Malaysian rivers!

The British band are trying their best to succeed in their efforts to stop garbage from reaching the ocean with the Interceptor 005, a machine built by The Ocean Cleanup – a Dutch non-profit organisation.

“Without action, there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050, which is why The Ocean Cleanup’s work is so vital. We’re proud to sponsor Interceptor 005 which will catch thousands of tons of waste before it reaches the ocean,” the organisation said in a statement.

The Interceptor 005 is not the first of its kind in Malaysia. The first Interceptor was received in August 2019 and placed in the Klang River.

The Coldplay-sponsored Interceptor is locally built in partnership with Finnish firm, Konecranes at their MHE-Demag facility in Bukit Raja, Klang.

Also known in production as Neon Moon 1, the Interceptor 005 is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in mid-2021 where its anticipated to catch up to 100 tonnes of trash, especially plastics, daily.

Bryan Slat, The Ocean Cleanup founder and chief executive officer, shared that Malaysia is the first to receive the Interceptor 005 which is the first of two produced for series production and the first of the third-generation design, to tackle the world’s 1,000 most polluted rivers worldwide.

According to the founder, plastic wastes that end up in the ocean eventually travels to ocean garbage patches where debris naturally accumulates in a vortex of circulating currents.

Plastic wastes can stay in the ocean garbage patches’ whirlpool for years and if we continue to pollute the earth, it will increase the adverse impact on ecosystems, health and economies.

The Ocean Cleanup first announced its Interceptor solutions in 2019 and is working to fix heavily polluted waterways around the world including Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, USA, Jamaica and Thailand.

Coldplay is definitely on the adventure of a lifetime with their environmental efforts and we’re right along with them!

We can’t wait to see a sky full of stars in Malaysia’s future!
