Many of us can say that our phones are a huge part of our lives and most of the time, you can find us staring at our phones.
Even if we’re sitting down, standing, lying down or even walking, many of us are always engrossed on our phones and sometimes, we don’t realise the dangers around us.
One designer however has come up with a camera to help keep those constantly on their phones, safe.

Minwook Paeng, an industrial design student has created a high-tech “third eye” camera that can be attached to an individual’s forehead to help them look out for obstacles as they walk.
Now, you should of course always be vigilant of your surroundings and it definitely is not safe to constantly have your eyes on your phone but with Minwook’s Third Eye, you’d at least have some peace of mind even if you’re glued to your phone.
The design consists of a translucent plastic case that’s fixed to the wearer’s forehead with a thin gel pad. Inside the plastic eye is a small speaker, a gyroscopic sensor and a sonar sensor.
The gyroscope detects when the wearer’s head in angled down and opens the eye’s plastic eyelid. The sonar sensor then begins to monitor the area in front of the user.
Upon detecting an obstacle, the sensor warns the wearer through the connected speaker.
“The black component that looks like a pupil is an ultrasonic sensor for sensing distance,” the designer shared. “When an obstacle is in front of the user, the ultrasonic sensor detects this and informs the user via a connected buzzer.”
Speaking to Dezeen, Minwook noted that his Third Eye is the first in line of projects where he tries to imagine what the future generations of “phono sapiens” may end up looking like.
“By using smartphones in a bad posture, our neck vertebrae are leaning forward giving us ‘turtle neck syndrome’ and the pinkies we rest our phones on are bending along the way,” the designer said.
“When a few generations go by, these small changes from smartphone usage will accumulate and create a completely different, new form of mankind.”
We definitely know a few people who could use this Third Eye because they’re constantly on their phones.
This creation could be the answer to our parents’ constant nagging at us to “get off our phones and look around”.
Do you know someone who the Third Eye would be perfect for? Share this with them!
