Many Malaysians can attest to how frustrating it is when you’ve been circling a parking lot for a while and finally find an empty spot, but to your dismay there’s someone standing there, chup-ing the parking for someone else!
This is a common occurrence, but the issue became a hot topic recently after a video of this became viral online
However, did you know that this is actually ILLEGAL in Malaysia?! Facebook user, En Sharul, recently shared a post on his page explaining that those found guilty of this crime can face punishment!

The act of “chupping” a parking spot is a criminal offence under Section 50(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“If any person, otherwise than with lawful authority, remains on any road or at any parking place for the purpose of importuning any other person in respect of the watching or cleaning of a motor vehicle, or for the purpose of directing any driver of a motor vehicle in respect of parking on such road or at such place, he shall be guilty of an offence.”
This law can be used at all areas whether public spaces or private places including shopping malls.

Those found guilty of “chupping” parking as set under Section 119 can face a fine not exceeding two thousand ringgit or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding four thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months or to both.
