According to reports, a ban on glitter is expected to be enforced in the United Kingdom next year after scientists and campaigners advocated about the hazards of glitter.
Glitter is primarily made up of microplastics, and is usually smaller than five millimeters, which makes it easy to enter the ocean waters and be consumed by marine life.
During a study about the hazards of glitter, a professor at Plymouth University, Richard Thompson, discovered that a third of the fish caught in England possessed plastic particles!
The microplactics pose a threat to the ecosystem, and are not found just in party or dress up glitter, but also in many personal care products. Microplastic can be found in personal care products too!
Although some personal care items still contain microplastics, many brands have removed microplastics from their products, while some are working on eco-friendlier options like biodegradable glitter.
Bye bye, glitter.
