During the tabling of Budget 2020, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that Plus highway users can expect an 18% discount beginning next year.

“The cabinet is mulling all proposals (to abolish tolls) including Khazanah Nasional’s plan to take over or divest all shares in Plus Malaysia Berhad,” the minister said.

“In line with the Pakatan Harapan manifesto, the people can enjoy an average discount of 18 percent at all Plus owned highways,” he said.

According to the minister, “Proposals received must have a positive fiscal impact and not increase the government’s debts, and debt servicing.”

“The 18 percent toll discount will save highway users RM1,130 million in 2020, and RM43 billion throughout the balance of the concession period up to 2038,” he noted.

The Finance Minister also announced that the government will be taking over four major highways in the Klang Valley – the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), SPRINT Expressway, SMART  Tunner (SMART), and the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS).

The tolls on these highways will instead be replaced with a congestion charge, though no word on when this will start just yet.

The minister added that congestion charges during peak hours and normal hours will be reduced by 30% compared to the current toll charges.

On top of that, during non-peak hours, these highways will be FREE for drivers, which when added up, will save drivers up to RM180 million a year!

For drivers who take the second Penang bridge, you’ll be glad to know that the toll will also be reduced from RM8.50 to RM7!

That's a lot to look forward to in 2020! Which are you most excited about? Let us know!
