Many times, when we’re out having a bite to eat, that bite becomes too much for some of us and we end up not finishing our food. This happens all the time but imagine if a total stranger came by to finish up what you couldn’t.
This scenario played out in Singapore recently and we’re really not sure what to think about it.

A recent post on the SG Food Rescue Facebook group by Luo Yonghui garnered much debate when the user shared that he had had a satisfying meal and did not use any money by finishing a complete stranger’s leftovers on a plate in a coffee shop.
Luo, who calls himself a “freegan,” had gone to a coffeeshop to buy food when instead, he saw a plate that someone had not finished which was left to be cleared.
“Feeling hungry so decided to go to coffeeshop to buy something but see got so much leftover,” he wrote on the post. “I just take new utensils and finish those. End up not spending anything and satisfied.”

First off, we feel a little sick.
Secondly, what is a “freegan” even?? For those of you not familiar with the term, we got you.
According to the Freegan in Singapore group on FB, a freegan is “someone who rejects consumerism and seeks to reduce waste, especially by retrieving and reusing discarded items. We become freegans to save money, to save people, or to save the earth. Some do it for all the above.”

Now, we kinda get the idea of being a freegan but unfortunately many were quick to comment on Luo’s post to let him know their thoughts on eating strangers’ leftovers.
Many of the comments also pointed out the health repercussions that could come with this behaviour.

We’re okay with helping our family or friends finish their food if it’s too much but we don’t think we can get on board with eating a complete stranger’s leftovers. What are your thoughts on the matter?
