As Lombok was hit with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, many used the safety check-in on Facebook and posted messages using the word ‘selamat’. This triggered a celebratory animation with balloons and confetti that wasn’t suitable for the context of Lombok’s earthquake, where at least 131 people were killed.

The word ‘selamat’ means ‘congratulations’ in Malay, which was why the celebratory animations were triggered. But ‘selamat’ can also mean ‘safe’, as in this context where Facebook users were wishing that those in Lombok are safe.
“We regret that it appeared in this unfortunate context and have since turned off the feature locally,” a spokesman of Facebook said.
According to authorities, tens of thousands have lost their homes due to the disaster. Search and rescue are continuing but destroyed roads and bridges have slowed things down.
