It's been roughly a week since SpongeBob SquarePants creator, Stephen Hillenburg, passed away after a long battle with ALS. In order to pay tribute to his work, a group of fans have started a petition to bring the Bubble Bowl to the Super Bowl.

A few days after Stephen's passing, this group of fans began a petition on Change.org calling for the National Football League (NFL) to perform SpongeBob's "Sweet Victory" during the half time show at 2019's Super Bowl.

Whether or not you're a fan of the Super Bowl, you would have most likely heard about their famous half-time show. This year, Justin Timberlake took the stage, while Maroon 5 have been slated to perform next year. SpongeBob fans are campaigning to bring one of the show's most memorable musical performances to the biggest stage in the United States.

The petition aims to reach 1 million people to support their cause. Currently, the petition has over 500,000 signatures!

Israel Colunga, who started the petition, wrote: "As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg - the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants - has passed away recently. As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show."

For those of you who don't know what "Sweet Victory" is, allow us to refresh your memory. In a season 2 episode, called "Band Geeks," SpongeBob and his friends lead a marching band - conducted by Squidward - to perform above the surface in front of a human audience at the Bubble Bowl - the SpongeBob version of the Super Bowl.

Although the NFL may not officially recognise the petition, the support and signatures that it has gotten is a testament to the number of people that Stephen has impacted with his work. But if the song is performed at the 2019 Super Bowl, it really will be a sweet victory for the fans!
