During the Men’s Longboard Open event, Roger Casugay of the Philippines had one goal in mind, to make his country proud by taking home the gold medal.
However, Roger ended making the world proud when he decided to forgo his lead in the event and instead chose to save his fellow competitor, Indonesia’s Arhip Nurhidayat, from drowning.

According to surfer Jefferson Ganuelas, Arhip’s surfboard leash – which ties the surfboard to the surfer; had broken off and detached itself from the board during the competition.
Arhip then got caught in the huge waves, which was noticed immediately by Roger – who at this point was leading in points.
The Philippines’ surfer then quickly rushed over and rescued the struggling Arhip from the waves, and they both then made their way back on Roger’s surfboard.
Roger and Arhip were escorted to shore by personnel on speedboats, and they were met by a cheering crowd who applauded the remarkable display of sportsmanship.
Both the competitors laughed and smiled while patting each other on the shoulders. Arhip even raised Roger’s hand in appreciation.
This is definitely what we call an amazing show of sportsmanship! Faith in humanity restored.
