Before you put your fist out to your friend for a bump, you might want to STOP because fist bumps are no longer advisable.

Yesterday, it was reported that Malaysia has once again reached triple digits in COVID-19 positive cases. As the number of cases rise, health officials are advising the public to minimise/stop any form of physical contact between individuals, and this includes fist bumps.

While handshakes have been given a wide berth during the pandemic, fist bumps seem to have taken over but according to Director-General of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, any form of physical contact presents the risk of infection.

“This is why we’re telling people not to fist bump,” he said.

“(There should be) no ‘salam’ and other forms of body contact, but today I see that the fist bump has not only become a trend but some people even embrace each other,” said Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.

“The ministry prefers placing the hand on the chest and bowing slightly as a respectful gesture of greeting because the current trend is not good,” he added. “I urge the people to be careful.”

Malaysia has been doing well when it comes to curbing the spread of COVID-19, but as is seen in the three-digit rise of positive cases, the fight against the pandemic is far from over.

So the next time you reach your hand out for a fist bump, maybe go for a non-contact wave or an air-high-five instead!

In the meantime, keep following all the safety procedures, physical distancing measures and SOPs to keep you and your loved ones safe!
