Last month, we had the haze. This month, we have the rain.

You’ve probably noticed that we’ve been getting heavy rains and storms almost every day lately, and while we’re thankful that the haze has more or less been drowned out, we’ve still got the rain and floods to deal with.

The Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry has urged Malaysians to be prepared and alert for worst weather and floods, especially the communities in low-lying areas and coastal parts of the country.

“According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) weather forecast, the country is experiencing the monsoon transition period until early next month,” said the ministry.

This transition period, which began late September, puts coastal areas at risk especially if continuous heavy rainfall coincides with the high tide.

With recent reports of flash floods in Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, the ministry has also warned that flash floods may occur more often especially in low-lying areas.

“During this phase, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and strong winds within a short period of time especially in the late evenings, will occur frequently,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The east coast of the peninsular and parts of Sabah and Sarawak will be exposed to the same situation.”

State authorities have also been urged to conduct frequent inspections on drainage systems in their areas and to also ensure that rivers and drains are free of blockage so that water will be able to flow smoothly.

“Those staying in areas prone to flash floods and also in low-lying areas are urged to always be on alert about the rainfall throughout this period,” said the ministry.
