Yay! No more near-death experiences at the SmartTAG toll barrier, hopefully.

Have you ever driven on the SmartTAG lane only to brake so suddenly that you nearly got into an accident with the toll barrier in front of you because it didn’t go up?! If we got a ringgit for every time that happened… we’d have enough to top up our Touch ‘n Go cards to last us the rest of the year!

Rejoice, people, for we may now have a solution.

Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi, Deputy Transport Minister, said the government is currently in talks with Touch ‘n Go to distribute RFID tags for free to locally-registered cars.

Key word here is FREE!

Short for radio frequency identification, RFID tag works in a manner similar to barcode scanning. The tag is ‘read’ by an overhead scanner through electromagnetic waves. Operation-wise, RFID tag will be superior compared to the current system. Like having your groceries scanned by a barcode scanner at the hypermarket, an overhead scanner would scan the RFID tag via electromagnetic waves as you pass through the toll gate.

Ab Aziz said the new RFID system should be ready for use by next year as well, and will be implemented in stages. You don't even have to hold up the device like how most of us do when we pass through the SmartTAG lane anymore!

All hail technology!
