Winter is coming... and it's taking its time...

If you've been on the edge of your seat, grasping at every bit of Game of Thrones (GOT) news you can find, we're with you. And if you've been wondering why it's taking FOREVER for the next and final season of the series to make its way to our screens, we've found out why.

After accepting the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, the Game of Thrones showrunners explained to reporters backstage why the final season is taking so long.

Writer-producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss told the press that even though the eighth season is only six episodes long, it’ll be very clear when watching the results, as to why it took longer than ever to shoot.

"The final season's taking a long time because it's the biggest thing we've ever done," David said. "It was nearly a full year in Belfast either prepping it or actually shooting it. I think when people see it, they're going to understand why it took so long. The last season is far beyond what we've ever attempted before."

GOT only recently wrapped filming the final season after getting underway late last year. Part of that extra time was for a battle sequence that was by far the most ambitious the show has ever filmed.

Author, George RR Martin, confirmed on the red carpet that there are still five prequel series in development at HBO. The final season will return in 2019.

The cast have teased that season eight will have "more death" than ever. That's saying something.

Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Missandei, told the Hindustan Times, "I think what we can expect from the final season of GoT is just a real push. Like in the last couple of seasons, we have seen the pace of the show increase with the stakes getting higher and higher."

“There are so many storylines that have to come to conclusion. We have to play them out, so the pace of the show is continuing on that sense. There are so many characters and stories that haven’t found their conclusion. So, this season is going to be incredibly satisfying for people,” Emmanuel teased. “It is going to be incredibly exciting and heartbreaking.”

There's nothing left to do but wait for 2019 then.
