When you scroll through Instagram or YouTube for videos to watch, we bet watching someone study silently for hours on end wouldn’t be your first pick. Yet apparently, this is exactly what South Korean kids are doing.

Gongbang is the name of a growing live-streaming trend in South Korea. The concept is simple, the streamer broadcasts videos of themselves studying in almost complete silence for hours to dozens, sometimes hundreds of viewers who couldn’t think of a better way to spend their time than watching these guys do it.

Bot-No-Jam is one of these streamers who’s found success on YouTube by broadcasting himself studying for up to 7 hours at a time. Previously, people said his good looks are the reason why he has so many people watching him study. But it turns out that he is just one of the many successful Gongbang streamers, who we assume must not be as good looking.

So, what is the story here? Why do South Korean kids love these videos so much? Apparently, some of them started just to prove to their parents that they were indeed studying, while others decided to use it as a self-motivation tool – when you know a tonne of people are watching you study, you’re less likely to let yourself be distracted.

But that only explains why people do it, not why people watch it. Many of the people who watch Gongbang do it while they study as well, as motivation. Every time they get distracted, the dedicated streamer reminds them that they need to get back to work. At the same time, for those who have to burn the midnight oil and study through quiet lonely nights, Gongbang reminds them that they arent the only ones who stay up all night to cram for an exam.

In an era where social media, smartphones and the internet provide endless distractions to us, Gongbang is an online support platform that keep students motivated to pay attention to their studying, and prevents them from feeling lonely while they do it.

Over 4,000 South Korean Gongbang videos have been uploaded to YouTube this year alone, and their number continues to grow. So, if you’re someone who’s supposed to be studying, turn on one of these Gongbang videos and let us know how you fare!
