Touch ‘n Go (TnG) announced on Wednesday (8 Aug) that they’ll not be selling SmartTAG devices anymore.

But SmartTAG users, don’t freak out just yet. You can still use your SmartTAG at all highways and toll booths in Malaysia. You can also still use your TnG cards and MyKads to pay toll fees as usual.
TnG is just planning to roll out the RFID (radio frequency identification) system for toll payment nationwide in January next year.

How does it work you ask? Well, you get a sticker with an RF chip embedded in it and you stick it onto your vehicle (we’re guessing the windscreen). Each sticker and chip is unique to each vehicle and it’s linked to a TnG eWallet. This enables users to top up and check balance via online banking or credit and debit cards.
They’re hoping that RFID will eventually replace SmartTAG—thus the discontinuation.
If you’re particularly interested in this new system, TnG will be testing a pilot phase in September before the full rollout next year.
You can register as a pilot user. All you have to do is submit your contact details to TnG’s website. You’ll receive an email prompting you to fill in your vehicle information and to make an appointment for RFID installation.
A portal specifically for RFID will be made available to the public on 3 September.

Once this system is in place, Malaysia will be among the first few countries to implement the system, after the United States, Argentina and Taiwan!
