Recently, the Selangor Health Department has reminded consumers to not buy or drink raw or unpasteurised milk that has not been properly processed.

Following the cases of goat milk from a farm in Pulau Indah, having been detected with Brucella bacteria; director Datuk Dr Khalid Ibrahim noted that the reminder needed to be issued to the public.

“Samples taken from the farm found that the milk contained Brucella bacteria as well as violating Section 13 (1) of the Food Act 1983,” he said. “The incident involves eight people who showed symptoms after drinking goat’s milk from the farm recently.”

Dr Khalid noted that consuming raw milk is risky among individuals with weak immune systems, especially the elderly, pregnant women and children.

He also added that the raw milk could be contaminated due to infections in the animal or from pollution that can cause illness to humans.

“When buying raw milk, make sure to properly boil it first before drinking,” Dr Khalid said. “Consumers are advised to drink pasteurised milk such as those with the ultra-high temperature treatment (UHT) apart from taking not of the storage method and expiry date.”

If consumers were to show any symptoms from consuming raw milk, the director advises the individual to seek treatment immediately.

Sellers and milk producers were also warned to comply with the requirements as stipulated under Regulation 51 of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, that prohibits the sale of unprocessed milk and to adhere to the prescribed method.

So remember, be careful when purchasing and consuming milk. Be sure that you’re not drinking raw or unpasteurised milk that could make you sick! Share this with a friend!
