Imagine needing to go to a bank or shop and you’re looking for parking. You’re going round and round and round searching for that one empty spot but, nope, nothing. PJ drivers would be all too familiar with this situation.

At a recent board meeting, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) had a discussion about increasing the hourly parking rate from the current 60 sen per hour.

Among the reasons cited by MBPJ for the move, is to encourage the use of public transportation and to prevent the hogging of parking bays by business owners, their staff and office workers.

“It does not make sense to collect 60sen an hour at locations such as PJ New Town and Damansara Uptown as these are prime areas. Kuala Lumpur City Hall charges much more at its CBD. The rates in MBPJ have not been reviewed for decades,” said city councillor, Terence Tan who called for the price review.

“I would like to suggest that a maximum period of two hours to be imposed to park in these areas to free up space for others,” he said.

Any increase that would be implemented would not be over 20%, the Petaling Jaya mayor, Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain said.

For now, the matter is still in the discussion stage.

Other business areas that would be included in the parking price increase are SS2, Section 14 and Section 17.

According to The Star, motorists have said that office workers in the area hog many open-air public-parking bays. As the workers only have to pay RM5 per day or RM100 for a monthly pass, the hourly rate is much lower than the set 60sen.

SS20 Rukun Tetangga chairman, Eileen Thong suggested several alternative methods for those who find the increase too expensive.

“They can carpool, for example,” she said. “Increasing the rate when the number of hours exceeds two is a good idea too. This will discourage motorists from parking at the same bay for the whole day.”
