YOU ARE GOING TO SEE SNOW FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Let that excitement sink in for a second. After many years of dealing with rainy and sunny days, it’s time to finally see what the deal with snow and winter is all about!

But before you go on your holiday, remember that while movies and TV shows make snowy winters look magical and romantic, the temperature can get really cold too. If you think being in your air-conditioned college classroom is bad, you ain’t feel nothing yet.

Here are 10 tried-and-tested tips from fellow Malaysians that have survived their first winter:

“Gloves, beanies and scarves may look like nothing, but when the cold air blows, they are lifesavers.”

“Pack a portable hot water flask with you to store warm water. In the winter, boiled water turns cold VERY QUICKLY.”

“If you’re driving, get a de-icer to melt the snow off your car’s windows. If you don’t have a scraper to scrape the ice off, you can use any card in your wallet—but don’t use the important bank cards lah!”

“Get a bunch of heat packs and stick them into the pockets of your winter jacket. So when it’s too cold, you can put your hands into the pockets for some warmth.”

“Check if your hotel offers free heater, because some hotels in Europe charge you for electricity. Saving your money by turning off the heater is not going to be a nice feeling.”

“Invest in winter or weather-proof boots. Your non-weather resistance sneakers may end up soaking up melted snow, giving your cold feet and squishy socks. And there’ll be mud too. So keep your expensive shoes at home.”

“Be careful where you’re walking. Sometimes you’re safe walking on snow, and sometimes it’s ICE, and you’ll slip and fall.”

“The only fashion rule you need is to dress like an onion. So you can peel off the layers when it gets too warm vs having nothing to put on when you’re freezing. Nobody will care that you’re all puffed up! Everyone dresses the same!”

“Your clothes and bag better be waterproof. Depending on where you are light drizzles could be common in winter and melted snow can leave you wet.”

“Because you have so many layers of clothes on, going to the toilet is going to take some time. So make sure you don’t run to the toilet only at the very last minute!”

Now that you know what to expect, the next thing to do is to start shopping for your winter wear. Pssst: we hear Universal Traveller is currently offering a year-end sale with discounts of up to 50%! So you can save money and spend more on your holiday!
