No matter what shape, size or species, we all love our pets.
But when something completely tragic happens to our pets, it’s definitely heartbreaking so we can’t help but to feel for this Indonesian man whose dad cooked up his pet arowana fish!

A man named Bayu from Indonesia’s Central Java region was devastated when he learnt that his dad had fried up his beloved pet arowana for his family’s lunch!
What’s worse? His brother even sent him pictures of the… process…
In an Instagram post, Bayu shared that he had paid 800,000 rupiah (RM240) for the golden arowana at a market in Jakarta four years ago. In case you didn’t know, the arowana is known as the most expensive aquarium fish in the world!
He estimated that his pet fish would have been worth 2 million rupiah (RM599) today.

According to the man, his arowana had grown too big for his aquarium so he moved it to his parents’ home since they had a bigger fish tank that was able to hold the arowana - which can grow up to 80cm long.
The arowana fish - which is a carnivorous fish, also requires a high-quality diet that includes crickets and shrimps.
As the pet was now in his parents’ home, Batu had tasked his father to care for the fish and ensure that it received everything it needed to continue growing.
Unfortunately, his father grew tired of taking care of the fish and decided to cook it instead...
“During its time there, my fish wasn’t taken care of until it got cross-eyed,” Batu told Tribun News. I had its eyes operated, thank God it got healthy again.”
“Then I got news that my father fried the fish,” he added.
Bayu sadly had to accept his pet’s unfortunate fate but he noted that he was relieved that no other family member had joined his father for the “expensive” meal.
Before the Asian arowana was prized as a symbol of wealth and prosperity in countries such as China, the luxury ornamental first was actually considered a poor man’s meal and was usually found swimming in the wild in Southeast Asia.
However, the slow-producing fish gained much popularity and it soon became largely depleted in the wild. These fishes are now fiercely guarded in farms.
The arowana is currently listed as an endangered species under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List.

We definitely feel for Bayu and we can only imagine the heartbreak he’s going through with the loss of his beloved pet!
