Starting January 2019, Japan will be imposing a tax of 1,000 yen (RM36.24) on all travellers leaving the country.
Dubbed sayonara (goodbye) tax, it applies to both local and foreign travellers except for children under the age of two and transit passengers staying in the country for less than 24 hours.
Revenue from the taxes will be used to improve airport infrastructure, including providing multilingual guides and facial recognition at gates, in addition to promoting Japanese tourism.
