Over the past year, we’ve all had to get used to following SOPs including wearing a face mask in public to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Since then, many types of face masks and shields have made their way onto the market, reusable and disposable. You can even say that face masks have become a fashion trend of its own.
Now, a Japanese laboratory has gone where no one has gone by creating the world’s first ever edible face mask, and it’s made out of melon bread!

If you’ve had Japanese Melon Bread (Melon Pan) before, you’ll know that the treat is sweet, delicious and gets its name from its shape that looks like a melon. However, there is no actual fruit in it.
Called the Mask Pan (Mask Bread), the edible face mask doesn’t just look good, it is reportedly also fully functional and made out of actual melon pan.

Created by an experimental lab that’s run by head massage specialists Goku no Kimochi The Labo, the edible face mask was developed in response to desires of three university students from Fukuoka and Okinawa, who love bread and said they dreamed of being able to smell melon bread all the time.
Chisato Komorita, Tenmi Nagano and Katsumi Ota are seen living their dream of constantly smelling the bread in a video where they paraded the new edible face mask.
A popular Tokyo-based melon pan chain with branches all over the country called Melon de Melon is responsible for providing the sweet-smelling bread used in the world’s first edible face mask.
Though it may seem like a prank, the Mask Pan is actually fully functional in protecting an individual and was properly tested for product performance by Unitika Garmentec Research Institute – a third-party testing institute for masks.
Results of the testing showed that the melon pan mask provides a level of protection that is the same or better than the commercially available mask as is seen in the “splash prevention performance visualization test”.
The test suggests that the melon bread mask can actually be used as serious face mask even though it looks like something you would want to sink your teeth into.
Available in packs of five for 1,800 yen (RM), the edible mask is only available in Japan thus far.
The company shared that it aims to make the product “the happiest mask in the world to fulfill the dreams of bread lovers”.

This is definitely an interesting (and delicious) invention!
If you can’t get one, you could always try to make your own at home but bear in mind that these edible masks are not approved in Malaysia yet, so be sure to wear an official face mask while you’re out and about.
