Employees At This Japanese Shrimp Factory Can Do Only The Work They Like, And Come In Anytime They Want

The work policy at this shrimp processing and packaging plant is outlined as:

“Whatever and whenever the heck you feel like it.”

The Papua New Guinea Seafood processing plant in Osaka, Japan made a major cut to its workforce five years ago to improve efficiency. Interestingly, they didn’t let anyone go—instead, they threw out the entire concept of a working schedule.

Now, their staff are free to come and go as they please. They can even take the day off without informing anyone. All they gotta do is let management know how long they worked by writing it on a whiteboard before they leave.

As a result, productivity is said to be up and labour management costs were reduced by 30%!

And don’t assume that this management style might result in people not coming in to work or not having enough people in on a daily basis. Their staff are so happy with the flexible work hours that they make it a point to come in and support the company. Think about it, if the company doesn’t do well and shuts down, they wouldn’t have such freedom elsewhere.

The company has been going strong this way for the last five years and only experienced two days where all their staff happened to be off at the same time. But they said the overall productivity levels off on other days when there are a lot of workers showing up at the same time.

So, here’s the question. Why do they allow their employees to only do what they want, whenever they want? Well, their reasoning is pretty simple—people tend to work slower when they’re doing things they don’t enjoy. Having everyone doing their preferred tasks results in overall productivity running at peak performance.

Also, their workforce is largely made up of mothers who can free themselves of the burden of worrying what would happen at work when their kids get sick or they’re needed at home.

Hopefully, the company will inspire others to put more faith in their employees and try out their management style. We’re definitely all for it!
