There was some bad news for Potterheads this week when Johnny Depp shared that he had been asked to exit his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beast 3.
While fans are angered by this move and have been taking to social media to share their thoughts, there is a silver lining for the actor.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny had filmed one scene for the movie before being asked to leave his role. This one scene however, is the silver lining for the actor.
As the actor had a “pay-or-play” contract with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter franchise, Warner Bros. is required to pay Johnny his fully salary, even if his role is recast.
“Warner Bros. will be on the hook for Depp’s full salary, even though he only had shot one scene since production began on September 20 in London,” The Hollywood Reporter reported.
“Like many A-list stars, Depp had a so-called pay-or-play contract, which requires that he be fully compensated whether or not the film is made and even if it is recast,” the outlet continued. “As is common with stars of his level, there was no morality clause in his contract, even though it was amended with each new installment.”
“Technically, Depp was not fired by Warner Bros. but asked to resign. It is unclear what recourse it would have had if the star refused.”
While we’re still losing Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, we’re happy that he at least has some good news.
