It’s always easy for some people to litter wherever they go with little to no consequences. But the town of Semporna is not having any of that!
Semporna has been labeled as the “dirtiest” town in Sabah, despite being a diving paradise, and the local council has decided to make a change.
If you were to get caught littering in Semporna, you’ll either have to pay a RM500 fine or be forced to pick up trash for an hour!
What’s worse than that is that you’ll have to wear a safety vest with the word “monyet” labeled on it while doing the particular community service because “only monkeys litter.”
A number of litterers have been caught since the initiative started on January 1 2019 and they compromised of “a mix of Malaysians and foreigners without valid travel documents.”
Certainly a way to raise awareness! Gotong-royong (clean up campaigns) will also be carried out for the next three Sundays to start off the anti-litter campaign.
So don’t be a monkey and litter as you wish! Would you want this law to be enforced nationwide? Let us know!
